Therapy and counseling is all about you. This section is about me.
For 33 years it has been my privilege to serve individuals and couples as they reshape difficult patterns, expand and strengthen relationship skills, and effectively resolve their concerns.
It is a wonderful time to be in this profession. Advances in the science and art of healing are a gift to the field of counseling and to the work done in my practice.
The field has been transformed by the emerging science of neuroplasticity, the gold-standard research on relationships by the Gottman Institute, the intuitive process of connection offered in Imago Relationship Therapy, and the ongoing research in healing modalities such as trauma-informed care and EMDR. We know so much more now than we did 33 years ago when I was in my graduate training.
A bit of work history
I began my work as a counselor at Greene Hall Outpatient Services in 1989. I’ve been in private practice since 2001. The details of my work history can be found on LinkedIn. In short, I’ve worked in substance abuse treatment centers, and as an Employee Assistance Professional with the United States Postal Service and then with United States Air Force civilian employees at Wright-Patterson AFB. I spent several years teaching as an adjunct professor at Sinclair College, and served as a contract part-time counselor at Wittenberg University. Before launching into private practice full-time, I worked briefly with Kettering Health Network as the clinical coordinator of Greene Hall Outpatient Services and with their EAP.
Clients describe me as authentic, down to earth, and attentive. I am respectful of the sacred process of finding meaning in the journey—and I acknowledge the often-messy challenges of being human. I listen carefully and seek a collaborative approach to our work together.

The photos on this website
My father’s 40 years with the United States Coast Guard made my world an expansive place. Today I am an enthusiastic traveler and amateur photographer. I took all but one of the photos on this website, mostly with an iPhone. My sister, Katherine Nelson, took the photo of me at the Mendenhall Glacier. Jay Bennett and Katherine Nelson have kindly agreed to the use of their images on this website.
